Self Consumption: Getting High on Technocratic Supply

the Experience Society ch 5

Ngl, even though we laughed our way through it, this chapter was a pretty big buzz kill. It was all about technology that allows us to consume ourselves narcissistically.

We discussed how various social media platforms allow us to create identities if ourselves, including through live streaming. The one thing that bothers me about this chapter and a lot of this book is the totalizing Doom and gloom. I know this is characteristic of a lot of marxists but I just don't think it's the way forward. It's not very absurdist of us to think we have the answers.

In fact this is one of the reasons why I think absurdism is more important than ever. Yes it's true that these technocratic systems can monopolize and subsume any meaning that we make, but as a good absurdist you know that all of that meaning is false and subject to corruption. We can't hold too tightly to meaning that we make.

I know that this very live streaming book club is part of the commoditization of experience, but Imma keep on keepin’ on because that's what we do.
